Univ.-Prof. DDr. Peter Lewisch holds the position of Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law at the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology, Faculty of Law, University of Vienna, since 2011. He serves as Director of the Center for Business and Financial Crime and Director of the Center for the Economic Analysis of Law at the University of Vienna. Lewisch earned his Dr. iur. in 1980 and Dr. rer. soc. oec. in 1987 from the University of Vienna, followed by habilitations in Criminal Law in 1992 and Constitutional Law in 1993. Admitted as an attorney-at-law in Austria since 1996, he is Senior Counsel at CERHA HEMPEL Rechtsanwälte GmbH, where he specializes in white-collar crime, public law and European law, and antitrust and competition law.

His research specializations include criminal law, the economic analysis of law, aspects of liberalism in history, constitution, and legal order, and legal commentary, such as on § 120a StGB. With a total of 70 publications documented in the University CRIS portal, key works feature recent contributions like the textbook "Strafrecht: Einführung in die Rechtswissenschaften Teil III – Studienjahr 2025/26" (2025, co-authored with S. Reindl-Krauskopf, F. Salimi, A. Tipold, I. Zerbes), "Aspekte des Liberalismus in Geschichte, Verfassung und Rechtsordnung" (2022, edited with C. Schmetterer), and "Kommentierung der § 120a StGB" (2022, co-authored with S. Reindl-Krauskopf) in the Wiener Kommentar zum Strafgesetzbuch. Earlier notable monographs and textbooks include "Abschaffung der Geschworenengerichte?" (2009), "Strafrecht Besonderer Teil I" (2nd edition, 1999), "Strafbarkeit der juristischen Person?
