About Peter

Professor Peter Mansell holds the position of Professor of Production Animals at the Melbourne Veterinary School, part of the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne, located at Werribee. He obtained his Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Melbourne, with the PhD completed from 1988 to 1991. Mansell graduated as a veterinarian from the University of Melbourne and has dedicated over 40 years to the veterinary profession. His career encompasses roles as a private veterinary practitioner, consultant, researcher, academic, educator, and professional regulator. Prior to his academic appointment, he worked in rural mixed practice and specialist cattle practice in Gippsland, Victoria. In 1994, he moved to the University of Melbourne Veterinary School at Werribee and has since advanced to his current professorial role. He also serves as Assistant Director Graduate Research at the Melbourne Veterinary School and is a nominee for Chair of Examiners in Veterinary Clinical Sciences.

Mansell's research specializes in veterinary science, particularly the diseases and management of dairy and beef cattle. His interests include cattle health, welfare, and production, with emphasis on bovine mastitis, milk quality, reproductive management, and disease control. His expertise covers animal husbandry, veterinary medicine, cattle milk, dairy cattle, and dairy animal science.
