Peter McEvoy is Professor of Clinical Psychology in Curtin University's School of Population Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, and Mental Health Domain Co-Lead in the enAble Institute. He earned his BSc (Hons), Master of Psychology (Clinical), and PhD from the University of Western Australia. Early in his career, he served as a clinical psychologist and service coordinator of the Anxiety Disorders Unit at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. Subsequently, he joined the Centre for Clinical Interventions (CCI) as a clinician and clinical researcher, advancing to Senior Clinical Psychologist and Research Director. At Curtin, he teaches and coordinates units in the Master of Clinical Psychology program, including Adult Psychopathology and Psychotherapy, and supervises honours, masters, and PhD students.
His research specializes in the assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders (such as social anxiety, generalised anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, panic, and agoraphobia), depression, eating disorders, and body dysmorphic disorder, employing transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioural approaches. Key interests include mechanisms of change in CBT, intolerance of uncertainty, perfectionism, repetitive negative thinking, and imagery-enhanced interventions. With over 160 peer-reviewed publications and more than 17,000 citations on Google Scholar, his work has substantial impact. He received the 2021 Australian Association for Cognitive and Behaviour Therapy (AACBT) Distinguished Career Award for contributions to research, teaching, and clinical innovation in CBT. McEvoy serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Anxiety Disorders and on editorial boards for Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy and Journal of Experimental Psychopathology. He collaborates with clinical services, co-leads mental health research initiatives like CO-ROAMERS WA, delivers public lectures and media appearances, and consults on mental health service delivery.
