Emeritus Professor Peter Skegg serves in the Faculty of Law at the University of Otago. He was educated at the University of Auckland, where he received an LLB (Hons), and at the University of Oxford, where he earned an MA and a DPhil. Skegg's academic career commenced at Oxford, where he was Official Fellow of New College from 1971 to 1984, including Visiting Fellowships in 1989 and 1996, and CUF Lecturer in Law from 1972 to 1984. He also chaired the Faculty of Law at Oxford from 1980 to 1984. In 1984, he joined the University of Otago as Professor of Law, a role he held until 2014, and served as Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1990 to 1992.
Skegg's research interests encompass medical law, criminal law, and healthcare ethics. His major publications include the revised edition of Law, Ethics and Medicine (1988, Clarendon Press/Oxford University Press), which received the quinquennial Swiney Prize in 1989. He co-edited Medical Law in New Zealand (2006, Thomson/Brookers), awarded the J F Northey Memorial Award in 2007, and Health Law in New Zealand (2015, Thomson Reuters). Additional contributions appear in Adams on Criminal Law and numerous articles in journals such as Law Quarterly Review, Cambridge Law Journal, Modern Law Review, Medical Law Review, Journal of Law and Medicine, and Journal of Medical Ethics. He has served on the international editorial boards of the American Journal of Law and Medicine, Journal of Law and Medicine, Medical Law International, Medical Law Review, and Journal of Bioethical Inquiry. Skegg's impact is recognized through the Festschrift Law, Ethics and Medicine: Essays in Honour of Peter Skegg (2016, Thomson Reuters) and his appointment as Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) in the 2012 Queen's Birthday Honours.
