Peter Wolnizer, BEc (University of Tasmania), MEc (1976), PhD (1986, supervised by Professor Ray Chambers) (University of Sydney), FCA, FCPA, OAM, is Professor Emeritus in the Discipline of Accounting at the University of Sydney Business School. Appointed as Lecturer in Accounting in 1976, he advanced through the ranks to Professor of Accounting. From 1999 to 2010, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, during which the faculty underwent significant strategic development, including achieving AACSB accreditation. His academic career also includes a subsequent appointment as Professor of Management at Macquarie University, where he acted as Dean of the Macquarie Graduate School of Management in 2017. Wolnizer's contributions extend to international leadership, as Chairman of the International Accounting Education Standards Board (IAESB) from 2012 to 2014, after serving as the Australian member from 2004 to 2006. In these roles, he advanced global standards for accounting education programs, emphasizing technical competence and professional skills.
Wolnizer's research focuses on accounting and auditing, with work published internationally in books and academic journals. Key publications include the seminal book Auditing as Independent Authentication (Sydney University Press, 1987), which examines the role of auditing in ensuring financial information quality; co-editorship of A Global History of Accounting, Financial Reporting and Public Policy (Emerald, 2012) with Gary Previts and Peter Walton; and articles such as 'Chambers as Educator and Mentor' (Abacus, 2002), 'Memorial: An Intellectual Memorial to Robert Raymond Sterling, Accounting Reformer' (2016), and contributions to accounting education standards research. He has influenced the field through editorial roles, public lectures, and involvement in accounting history projects, including the Chambers Archive at the University of Sydney. Recognized for his service, Wolnizer received the Order of Australia Medal (OAM), Fellowship of CPA Australia (FCPA), and Fellowship of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (FCA). He was honored as a Notable University of Sydney Member in 2012.
