Dr Pieter van Schalkwyk is a Lecturer in Marketing at Murdoch Business School, Murdoch University. He serves as Academic Chair for the Undergraduate Marketing, Undergraduate Entrepreneurship & Innovation, and Undergraduate International Business programs. His research focuses on entrepreneurship, marketing, and consumer behaviour. Postgraduate studies centred on marketing and entrepreneurship, leading to a Doctor of Philosophy in Marketing Management from North West University (South Africa) in 2019 and a Master of Commerce in Marketing Management from the same university in 2014. Before joining Murdoch University in January 2024, he was employed as a Senior Lecturer at North West University from February 2015.
Key publications include the journal article 'Influence of Materialism and Status Consumption on Young Adults’ Credit Intentions' co-authored with A. Bevan-Dye, published in 2020 in the International Journal of Social Sciences and Humanity Studies. He co-authored 'The Correlation Between Materialism, Social Comparison and Entrepreneurial Intention Among Final-Year Students' with T. Pelser and J. H. van Schalkwyk in 2023 in the South African Journal of Higher Education. Other works comprise 'Commercial farmers' success factors as a benchmark in the development of emerging farmers' (2022, with A. S. Pelser and T. Pelser), 'South African Small Independent Retailers' Knowledge of the Consumer Protection Act (2007): An Exploratory Study,' and conference papers such as 'Materialism, status consumption and attitude towards money' and 'Factors Influencing Credit Attitude.' Dr van Schalkwyk is a member of the editorial team for the Retail and Marketing Review. He teaches marketing units including BUS225 Services, Relationship and Retail Marketing and BUS370 at the South Street Campus.
