Dr. Pradeep G. Bhide is a Professor of Biomedical Sciences and Neuroscience at Florida State University College of Medicine, where he holds the Jim and Betty Ann Rodgers Eminent Scholar Chair of Developmental Neuroscience. He currently directs the FSU Institute for Pediatric Rare Diseases and the Center for Brain Repair. Prior to joining FSU in 2011, he served as Director of the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Center and Vice Chair for Neurology Research at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston from 2003 to 2011. Bhide obtained his veterinary medicine degree from Veterinary College in Bangalore, India, and his Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He completed postdoctoral training in developmental neurobiology at University College London, Yale School of Medicine, and Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
Bhide's research program centers on developmental neurobiology and the neurobiology of disease, with a principal focus on dopamine's role in brain development and its implications for disorders like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), early-onset generalized dystonia, and Fragile X Syndrome. His laboratory investigates the neurological and cognitive impacts of prenatal and early postnatal exposure to substances such as cocaine, nicotine, and non-nutritive sweeteners, including aspartame, as well as the origins of movement disorders like generalized dystonia. Employing techniques including microscopy, biochemistry, molecular biology, neuropharmacology, and behavioral assays, his work has produced key findings on transgenerational effects of exposures. Notable publications include "Transgenerational transmission of aspartame-induced anxiety and changes in glutamate-GABA signaling..." (PNAS, 2022), "Nicotine exposure of male mice produces behavioral impairment in multiple generations..." (PLoS Biology, 2018), and "Early and progressive accumulation of reactive microglia in the Huntington disease brain" (Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology, 2001). Bhide has earned awards such as the Wellcome Trust Fellowship, Charles A. King Trust Fellowship, Montreal Neurological Institute Young Investigator Award, and the Outstanding Senior Faculty Researcher Award from the FSU Faculty Council. In 2026, he was inducted as a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors.
