Rachel Ocampo Hoogasian is a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Counseling and Counseling Psychology at Arizona State University, a position she has held since Fall 2025, following roles as Clinical Assistant Professor from Fall 2019 to Spring 2025 and Faculty Associate in Spring 2019. She earned a PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in August 2016, an MA in Mental Health Counseling from Boston College in May 2010, a BA in Sociology and Religious Studies from the University of Arizona in May 2007 cum laude, and an AA from Pima Community College in June 2005. Her professional career includes lecturing in the Department of Counseling Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2012 and 2013, a pre-doctoral internship at the Southern Arizona Psychology Internship Center from 2015 to 2016, and various master’s-level clinician positions at institutions such as the Wisconsin Psychiatric Institute and Clinics, Counseling Psychology Training Clinic, and Fortalezas Familiares Program between 2010 and 2014. As a licensed psychologist, she operates private practices through Growth Through Connection, LLC since October 2016 and The Warrior Mentality, LLC since April 2024.
Hoogasian's research interests encompass sports and performance psychology, with a focus on the mental health trajectories, experiences, and multiple roles of football coaches and players through large-scale cross-country studies, as well as Latinx mental health and spirituality, including traditional healing practices like Curanderismo and program development for youth wellness in collaboration with the University of New Mexico. She mentors the Culture, Athletics, Spirituality and Mental Health Research (CASMR) Lab at ASU. Notable publications include her book 'The influence and psychology of American football coaches upon adolescents: the warrior mentality' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024); 'Integrating Curanderismo into counselling and psychotherapy' (Counselling Psychology Quarterly, 2010, with R. Lijtmaer); a chapter 'Healing with Curanderas: Exploring the conceptions of illness, healing processes, and outcomes of Mexican American clients in Curanderismo' in Latinx Healing Practices: Psychospiritual Counseling Interventions (2020, with T. Chavez & B.W. McNeill); and 'The healing powers of a patrón espiritual: Latina/o clinicians’ understanding and use of spirituality and ceremony in psychotherapy' (Journal of Latina/o Psychology, 2015, with A.M. Gloria). She has published additional books on the warrior mentality for youth, high school, and college teams in 2024. Her accolades include multiple ASU Professor of Impact Awards (Spring 2023, 2024, and 2025), the ASU Serving University Needs (SUN) Award (Spring 2025), the UW-Madison R. Wray Strowig Award (2013), and various grants such as the Tinker/Nave Fund Short-term Field Research Grant (2012). Hoogasian frequently presents on topics including the warrior mentality in coaching, mental health in competitive youth sports, and integrating cultural healing practices, at venues like the National Latinx Psychological Association Conference and ASU CISA Student Showcases.
