Dr. Rami Olwan is a Senior Lecturer in business law and intellectual property at the School of Law within the Faculty of Business and Law at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. He currently serves as Co-Academic Discipline Lead and Course Lead for Business Law. Olwan earned his PhD in intellectual property law from Queensland University of Technology, an LLM in International and Commercial Laws from Buckingham University in the United Kingdom, and an LLB from Yarmouk University in Jordan. He has also completed postgraduate degrees in intellectual property from institutions in the United States and Australia. Prior to joining Curtin University in 2023, he held positions as Lecturer in Law at the University of Southern Queensland's School of Law and Justice, and Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. He has served as a Visiting Research Scholar at Queensland University of Technology.
Olwan's research specializations include intellectual property law, copyright law with a focus on the Middle East and Arab Gulf states, intellectual property and development, corporate law, fair use doctrine, originality requirements in copyright, Marrakesh Treaty implementation, educational exceptions, and intellectual property management for small and medium-sized enterprises. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications, including the monograph Intellectual Property and Development: Theory and Practice (Springer, 2012), the co-authored textbook Intellectual Property: Principles and Practice (Lawbook Co., 2022) with Anne Fitzgerald and Dimitrios Eliades, and key articles such as 'A Pragmatic Approach to Intellectual Property and Development: A Case Study of the Jordanian Copyright Law in the Internet Age' (2013), 'The Ratification and Implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty for Visually Impaired Persons in the Arab Gulf States' (2017), 'The Adoption of the American Model of Fair Use in the UAE Copyright Law' (2018), 'Intellectual Property Management for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in the United Arab Emirates' (2021), and 'The Requirement of Originality in the Copyright Laws of the Arab Gulf States: Perspectives from Author’s Rights Jurisdictions' (2023). His scholarship, reflected in 204 citations on Google Scholar, examines developmental perspectives on IP regimes in developing countries, particularly Jordan and the Gulf states. In January 2026, Olwan was promoted to Senior Lecturer following three years at Curtin Law School. He teaches units such as Company Law for Business.
