Rebeca Cotera is a Full-time Instructor in Architectural Drafting in the Architecture and Design faculty at Portland Community College, based at the Sylvania Campus in HT 207.11. As co-chair of the Architectural Design and Drafting department with Peter Gramlich, she oversees a program that trains students to become architectural designer/drafters capable of designing and remodeling homes and small commercial buildings. Her leadership roles include Faculty Department Chair (co-chair) and SAC Chair, contributing to program reviews, information sessions, and student advising. Cotera earned her Master of Architecture (MAR) in Architecture from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She also holds a Master of Science in Counselor Education, Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling from Portland State University (2015) and a Bachelor of Science in Women, Gender & Sexualities from Portland State University (2012).
Cotera joined Portland Community College as an adjunct instructor in Architectural Design, serving for eight years prior to her full-time faculty appointment as Instructor in Architectural Design within the Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Design Division, effective September 1, 2017, with an annual salary of $55,596 at Step 3. She teaches a range of essential courses, including ARCH 126: Introduction to AutoCAD, introducing students to AutoCAD software as a design and drafting tool for architecture and interior design; ARCH 136: Intermediate AutoCAD; ARCH 280 CE: Arch Design & Drafting, a 3-credit course; and ARCH 132: Residential Building Codes, offered in both in-person fall sections and online winter sections. Her experience indicates effective instruction across formats, with no performance differences in final grades between in-person and online students. A 2020 PCC news article, 'Bridging Careers,' featured Cotera as a role model for student Marisol Gomez, a Latina entering the male-dominated field, who credited her with providing invaluable technical drafting skills and inspiration from day one.
