Dr. Rebecca A. Cooper serves as Director of Academic Assessment and Professor of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education at Georgia Gwinnett College. She earned her doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Florida, a master’s degree in biology from Florida International University, and a bachelor’s degree in biology and environmental science from Allegheny College. With over 22 years in academia, including more than a decade at GGC, Dr. Cooper has extensive experience in learning outcomes assessment, pedagogy, and faculty leadership. Prior roles include Academic Assessment and Accreditation Fellow and Center for Teaching Excellence ePortfolio Fellow. She has developed and taught online courses for over 15 years, focusing on integrating technology into teacher preparation.
Dr. Cooper is a recognized leader in incorporating artificial intelligence into education, particularly for preservice teachers. As one of Georgia's foremost experts, she redesigned her technology course to include AI-generated tools like podcasts, quizzes, study guides, chatbots, and collaborative note-taking aids to boost engagement and accessibility. Her research explores preservice teachers' perceptions of AI, online teaching efficacy, and professional development in digital classrooms. Notable publications include "Friend or foe: Pre-service teachers' perceptions of AI" (2025, with T. Howse, S. Mrstik, J. Cauthen), "Teaching in the Age of AI: Pre-Service Educators' Evolving Perspectives for Professional Development and Learning" (2025), "An evolution of research on online teaching and learning: Preparing preservice teachers for the new digital classroom" (2025), "Preservice Teachers Learning to Teach Online: Developing Teacher Leaders" (2024), "An Evolution of Preparing Preservice Teachers to Teach Students with Disabilities Online" (2024), "Leadership in Technology: One Educational Preparation Program’s Journey for Teaching Educational Technology to Teacher Candidates" (2021), and "Preparing Preservice Teachers for the Online Classroom" (2021). Awards and honors include the 2025 Top Claw Award, membership in the Governor's Teaching Fellows Program, and the D2L Excellence Award won by her School of Education team in 2023. Through her innovative approaches, Dr. Cooper significantly impacts teacher education and assessment practices.
