Dr. Reeve Kennedy is an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the School Social Work program in the School of Social Work within East Carolina University’s College of Health and Human Performance. Her educational background encompasses a B.A. in Psychology from Vassar College, an M.A. in Sociology from the University of New Hampshire, an M.S.W. in Social Work from the University of New Hampshire, a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of New Hampshire, and a postdoctoral fellowship in Sociology and Criminology at The Pennsylvania State University. Following her postdoctoral research, which focused on expanding publications and collaborations in peer harassment, child maltreatment, and advanced statistical techniques, Kennedy joined East Carolina University in fall 2022 on a tenure-track position.
Kennedy’s research specializations include child well-being, bullying involvement, experiences, and trends over time, child maltreatment, and the application of meta-analysis methodologies. She is recognized as an expert in bullying, cyberbullying, child and adolescent wellbeing, quantitative and longitudinal methods, and bullying prevention. Key publications feature “Traditional Bullying and Cyberbullying Victimization Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Meta-Analysis” (International Journal of Bullying Prevention, 2024), “Do foster youth face harsher juvenile justice outcomes? Re-investigating child welfare bias in juvenile justice processing” (Criminology & Public Policy, 2024), “Does multidimensional self-concept mediate the relationship of childhood sexual abuse and bullying victimization on deliberate self-harm and suicidal ideation among adolescent girls?” (Child and Adolescent Social Work Journal, 2023), “A Meta-Regression of Racial Disparities in Wellbeing Outcomes During and After Foster Care” (Trauma, Violence & Abuse, 2023), “Child Protection Intervention and the Sexual and Reproductive Health of Female Adolescents Ages 13 to 17 Years” (JAMA Pediatrics, 2022), “Bullying trends in the United States: A meta-regression” (Trauma, Violence & Abuse, 2021), “Bully-Victims: An Analysis of Subtypes and Risk Characteristics” (Journal of Interpersonal Violence, 2021), and “A meta-analysis of the outcomes of bullying prevention programs on subtypes of traditional bullying victimization: Verbal, relational, and physical” (Aggression and Violent Behavior, 2020). Among her honors are the National Institutes of Health Early Career Reviewer Training Program (2023), American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare Mentoring Program (2023), and Doris Duke Fellowship for the Promotion of Child Wellbeing (2017). As Principal Investigator, she directs “Is that Bullying: Prevalence and Perceptions of Bullying In Pitt County Middle Schools” funded by EOSA (2024-2025). She is Co-Principal Investigator on “Risk factors and outcomes associated with out-of-county placements for high-needs youth” and “Understanding and Improving Foster Parent and Kinship Care Recruitment and Retention in North Carolina,” both funded by the North Carolina Policy Collaboratory (2025-2026). Kennedy holds memberships in the American Society of Criminology, Bullying Research Network, Society for Social Work Research, Child Well-Being Research Network, and Society for Research in Child Development, and engages in peer review for journals including Clinical Social Work Journal, Journal of Child and Adolescent Social Work, Teacher’s College Record, and Trauma, Violence, and Abuse, while serving on the DEIJ Committee for the Child Well-Being Research Network.
