Dr. Reid Vance is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at Mississippi College, a role he assumed on July 1, 2020, succeeding Dr. Cliff Fortenberry. A native of Canton, Mississippi, he holds a B.S. in Communication and an M.S. in Communication from Mississippi College, an M.A. in Christian Education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education from Azusa Pacific University, awarded in January 2020. His doctoral dissertation, titled “Characteristics of Christian College Faculty Who Prioritize Students’ Development of Vocational Calling,” examines aspects of faculty priorities in Christian colleges. Vance has served as a professor at Mississippi College since 2007, teaching courses in journalism, sports media, mass media, political communication, and contributing to the Honors College. He has prior experience in college student affairs, campus ministry, church leadership, and Christian camp ministry. Vance has been key in developing the department's online programs and establishing communication internships for students in Washington, D.C.
In addition to his academic responsibilities, Dr. Vance is the broadcast Voice of the Choctaws for Mississippi College athletics, a position he held entering his 17th season in 2020. He provides play-by-play commentary for football, basketball, and baseball games, and contributes to live streams, interviews, and highlight videos that promote Choctaw student-athletes and coaches. His work in athletic broadcasting earned him the 2012 American Southwest Conference Outstanding Media Service Award for coverage of Mississippi College athletics, the ASC, and NCAA Division III athletics. He resides in Clinton, Mississippi, with his wife, Cheli, and they lead the young single adult ministry at First Baptist Church of Jackson.
