Rev Dr Sean Fernandez serves as Senior Lecturer in Theology at the University of Notre Dame Australia’s School of Philosophy and Theology on the Fremantle campus. Fr Sean was born in Singapore and immigrated to Australia in 1985. He took a Bachelor of Theology from Flinders University of South Australia while studying for the priesthood at St Francis Xavier Seminary. Ordained to the priesthood in 1994, he worked in parishes for three years before being sent to Rome. There, he earned a Licence in Theology specialising in Fundamental Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, followed by a Doctorate in Theology at the same institution. His doctoral thesis focused on an aspect of Trinitarian theology, developed while residing at Magdalene College. During his time in Rome, Fr Sean was a member of the faculty of theology at the Gregorian University.
Fr Sean teaches Fundamental Theology, covering revelation, faith, reason, and culture, as well as Dogmatic Theology on the Trinity. His research interests include the Trinity, Karl Rahner, John Henry Newman, St Thomas Aquinas, Nicholas Lash, Herbert McCabe, and Cornelius Ernst. Key publications comprise an article in According to your Word: Proceedings of a Conference held at the Pontifical Irish College in Rome to honour Desmond Cardinal Connell on his Eightieth Birthday (Dublin, 2007) and a series of articles for The Record. In addition to his academic appointment, Fr Sean is Dean and Administrator of St Mary’s Cathedral, Perth.
