About Richard

Richard H. Clarida is the C. Lowell Harriss Professor of Economics and Professor of International and Public Affairs in the Business & Economics faculty at Columbia University, where he has taught since 1988, serving as Department Chair from 1997 to 2001. He earned a B.S. in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1979 with Bronze Tablet Honors, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University in 1983 with Distinction. His early career included an appointment as Assistant Professor of Economics at Yale University from 1983 to 1988 and as Senior Staff Economist on the President's Council of Economic Advisers during the Reagan Administration from 1986 to 1987. In public service, Clarida served as Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury for Economic Policy from February 2002 to May 2003, earning the Treasury Medal for Distinguished Service, and as Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors from September 2018 to January 2022. He has also held the role of Global Strategic Advisor at PIMCO from 2006 to 2018 and rejoined as Global Economic Advisor in 2022.

Clarida's research focuses on international macroeconomics and macroeconomics, particularly monetary policy, exchange rates, interest rates, and international capital flows. He has authored numerous influential publications, including 'Monetary Policy Rules and Macroeconomic Stability: Evidence and Some Theory' with Jordi Galí and Mark Gertler in the Quarterly Journal of Economics (2000), 'The Science of Monetary Policy: A New Keynesian Perspective' in the Journal of Economic Literature (1999), and 'A Simple Framework for International Monetary Policy Analysis' in the Journal of Monetary Economics (2002). He edited the volume G7 Current Account Imbalances: Sustainability and Adjustment (University of Chicago Press, 2007) and co-edited the NBER International Macroeconomics Annual from 2004 to 2018. His research has been presented to major central banks such as the Federal Reserve, ECB, Bank of England, and Bank of Japan. Clarida is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Bureau of Economic Research, contributing significantly to the field through editorial roles and policy advisory positions.
