About Richard

Richard Corsi is Professor Emeritus and Joe J. King Chair of Engineering #2 in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering within the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He earned a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Davis in 1989, an M.S. in Civil Engineering from UC Davis in 1985, and a B.S. in Environmental Resources Engineering from Humboldt State University in 1983. Corsi joined the UT Austin faculty in 1994 as Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1997 and full Professor in 2002. He served as Chair of the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering from 2013 to 2017, co-director of the Center for Sustainable Development, and director of an NSF IGERT program on Indoor Environmental Science and Engineering. Prior to UT Austin, he was Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, from 1990 to 1993.

His research specializes in indoor air quality, including characterization of indoor sources, fate and control of air pollutants, chemical and physical interactions between indoor pollutants and material surfaces, and human exposure to toxic chemicals indoors. Corsi has been principal investigator on over 70 scientific research projects totaling approximately $12 million and has advised dozens of students. Notable publications include 'Impact of Physical Properties on Ozone Removal by Several Porous Materials' (Gall et al., Environmental Science & Technology, 2014), 'Characterizing Particle Resuspension from Mattresses: Chamber Study' (Boor et al., Indoor Air, 2015), 'Desorption of a Methamphetamine Surrogate from Wallboard under Remediation Conditions' (Poppendieck et al., Atmospheric Environment, 2015), and the book chapter 'VOC Emissions from Sewers' in VOC Emissions from Wastewater Treatment Plants: Characterization, Control, and Compliance (CRC Press, 2002). He has received major awards such as the Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award (2016), membership in the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at UT Austin (2015), Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Medal from UC Davis (2016), Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company Award for Excellence in Engineering Teaching (2013-2014), Ervin S. Perry Teaching Awards (1999, 2006, 2007, 2013), and election to the Academy of Fellows of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (2008).
