Associate Professor Rob Paul is a distinguished ophthalmologist and educator serving as Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Curtin Medical School within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin University. He obtained his MBBS from the University of Western Australia in 1992, earning the prestigious Helen Jane Lamard Prize for achieving the highest distinction in surgery. Paul completed his ophthalmology specialist training in Western Australia in 2001, followed by a fellowship in corneal and refractive surgery at the University of Toronto in 2002. His qualifications include MBBS and FRANZCO. Throughout his career, he has pioneered several advancements in laser eye surgery in Western Australia, becoming the first surgeon to undertake formal higher training in the field, the first to perform live surgery at an international meeting, the first to conduct the Intralase bladeless procedure at St John of God Murdoch Hospital, and the first to insert approved phakic intraocular lenses. From 2002 to 2007, he worked as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Fremantle Hospital, where he trained eye surgeons, and he maintains a Visiting Medical Officer position at Bentley Hospital, actively teaching ophthalmology registrars and medical students.
Currently, Rob Paul serves as Medical Director and Consultant Ophthalmologist at WA Laser Eye Centre, with special clinical interests in cataract surgery, corneal surgery, laser refractive surgery, and laser cataract surgery. He consults at Suite 30, 85 Monash Avenue, Nedlands, and WA Laser Eye Centre, Suite 1, 533 Canning Highway, Alfred Cove. Paul is deeply committed to professional education and leadership, acting as an examiner for Australian Eye Surgeons, a Part 1 RANZCO Examiner in Optics, and a mentor for fellowship training in laser refractive surgery. He holds leadership positions within the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, including Federal Councillor, and previously served as Secretary and Treasurer of the WA Branch. Additionally, he is Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia School of Optometry, contributing to the training of future optometrists and ophthalmologists through his extensive clinical and academic expertise.
