Roba Abbas is an Honorary Senior Fellow in the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of Wollongong, Australia. She serves as Chair of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology Socio-Technical Systems Technical Committee and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Technology and Society since May 2023. Previously, she was a Senior Lecturer in Operations and Systems and Academic Program Director in the Faculty of Business and Law. Abbas holds a Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology with first-class honours from the University of Wollongong. Her research interests include the social implications of emerging technologies such as extended reality, artificial intelligence, and location-based services; ethics in AI and autonomous systems; public interest technology; socio-technical systems; privacy, data rights, and cybersecurity; human-centered AI design; and digital technologies in relation to climate change.
Abbas has authored numerous publications demonstrating her influence in the field, including 'Socio-technical theory: a review' (2023), 'The Social Implications of XR: Promises, Perils, and Potential' (2024), 'Public Interest Technology for Innovation in Global Development: Recommendations for Launching PIT Projects' (2024), and 'Climate change and COP26: Are digital technologies and information management part of the problem or the solution?'. Her work has garnered over 2,845 citations according to Google Scholar. She has guest-edited special issues for IEEE Transactions on Technology and Society and Technology and Society Magazine, held IEEE roles such as Co-Editor, Associate Editor, publication administrator, Australia Council Student Activities Coordinator, and Conference Technical Program Chair, and was nominated for the University of Wollongong Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning in 2021. Her teaching experience covers information systems, operations management, human-centered design, e-business management, engineering design, and logistics systems. Abbas is recognized internationally for her interdisciplinary expertise bridging business, informatics, and engineering in socio-technical research.
