Dr. Robert Penafort serves as an Associate Professor (Practice) at the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia. His primary research interests lie in pediatric orthopedic surgery and orthopedic trauma. Penafort completed his undergraduate medical education at Trivandrum Medical College in India, graduating with an MBBS degree in 1990. He then worked as a house officer at University Hospital and as a medical officer in Sarawak for three years. In 1994, he began postgraduate training at University Malaya Medical Center, earning a Masters in Orthopedic Surgery in 1998 and receiving the prestigious Subramaniam Gold Medal for being the top student. From 1998 to 2000, he was an Orthopedic Specialist at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Subsequently, he joined University Malaya Medical Center as a Lecturer in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery from 2000 to 2004. Since 2004, he has held the position of Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at Damansara Specialist Hospital. Throughout his career, Penafort has been deeply engaged with the Malaysian Orthopedic Association, holding various positions including the presidency, and he maintains a strong commitment to teaching.
Penafort's scholarly contributions include several key publications in orthopedic surgery. Notable works are "Anxiety Reaction in Children During Cast Removal using Oscillating Saw versus Cast Shear - A Randomised, Prospective Trial" published in 2021, "Dynamic Hip Screw Compared to Condylar Blade Plate in the Treatment of Unstable Fragility Intertrochanteric Fractures" in 2009, "A simple practice protocol for care of metal-skin interface of external fixation" in 2006, "Resection arthrodesis for primary bone tumour about the knee" in 2005, and "Comparison of Two Methods of Percutaneous Pin Fixation in Displaced Supracondylar Fractures of the Humerus in Children" in 2004. His research has garnered over 200 citations, influencing clinical practices in fracture management and pediatric orthopedics. His expertise and leadership in the field underscore his significant impact on orthopedic education and practice in Malaysia.
