Rocio Blasco Garcia is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Director of the Spanish Programme in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Hong Kong. She has demonstrated long-term dedication to the university, earning the 15-year service award in 2016 for her commitment and loyalty. Her involvement spans teaching, programme leadership, and event coordination, contributing significantly to Spanish language education at HKU. As the primary contact for Spanish programme enquiries, including faculty recruitment such as the Lecturer/Assistant Lecturer in Spanish (Global and Area Studies) position, she plays a central role in sustaining and expanding the programme's offerings.
Blasco Garcia's academic career at HKU traces back to at least 1996, when she was described as a professional translator and part-time teacher in the Language Centre. That year, she co-authored Chapter 14, 'Interactive video as self-access support for language-learning beginners,' with David Gardner in the book Taking Control: Autonomy in Language Learning, published by Hong Kong University Press. She later contributed the chapter 'Spain: One Country, Many Regional Identities' (pp. 213–232) to the edited volume European National Identities: Elements, Transitions, Conflicts, published by Transaction Publishers in 2014. Additionally, she has served as a reviewer for the Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics, acknowledging her expertise in language pedagogy. Blasco Garcia has been instrumental in organizing key events, such as the Hispanic Month celebrations in 2011, open houses for programmes, and recent workshops including 'Teaching Spanish Pronunciation: Why, What, When and How' on April 14, 2023, featuring Dr. Alfonso Morales-Front from Georgetown University, and 'One Size Fits All? Learners, Learning Context, and Second Language Acquisition' in 2023. Through these activities and her directorial role, she fosters engagement with Spanish language and Hispanic cultures among students and the academic community at the University of Hong Kong.
