Professor Ron Grunstein AM is a Professor of Sleep Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Central Clinical School and serving as Senior Staff Specialist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) and MD degrees from the University of Sydney, along with a PhD from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. With more than 30 years as a consultant physician specializing in sleep disorders, Professor Grunstein has been a pioneer in advancing patient care in sleep medicine both in Australia and internationally. He heads the Sleep and Circadian Research Group at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and has been recognized as the most published sleep researcher in Australia, with over 414 publications including book chapters.
Professor Grunstein's career includes significant leadership roles, such as Chief Investigator A on three successive NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence from 2004 to 2018 and President of the World Sleep Federation from 2007 to 2011, during which he organized world congresses in Cairns and Kyoto. His contributions to sleep and circadian research have earned him prestigious awards, including the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2019 for significant services to medical research and education, the Australasian Sleep Association Distinguished Achievement Award in 2010, the Kleitman Award from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine in 2011, the Royal Prince Alfred Foundation Medal for Excellence in Medical Research in 2012, the Distinguished Professor Award from the Sydney Medical School in 2014, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in 2021, Fellow of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand in 2022, and the NHMRC Investigator Leadership Level 3 award, the highest level research appointment from the National Health and Medical Research Council. His work has profoundly influenced the field of sleep medicine through extensive research output and international leadership.
