Dr. Ross Wilson serves as a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Musculoskeletal Outcomes Research (CMOR) within the Department of Surgical Sciences at the Dunedin School of Medicine, University of Otago. He earned his PhD in Economics from Lund University, Sweden, in 2016, and a BCom with First Class Honours from the University of Otago between 2006 and 2010. Since 2018, Wilson has been affiliated with the University of Otago, contributing to health economics research focused on musculoskeletal disorders within the New Zealand healthcare system.
Wilson's academic interests center on health economics, including the valuation and measurement of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for economic evaluations, cost-effectiveness analyses of healthcare interventions, and simulation modeling of disease progression and treatments to guide policy decisions. His work addresses key challenges such as the management of osteoarthritis, multimorbidity in primary care, and gout prophylaxis. Notable impacts include projections that knee osteoarthritis costs in New Zealand could nearly double to $370 million and research indicating that New Zealand's average body mass index will exceed the obesity threshold by the early 2030s if current trends persist. Key publications encompass Pryymachenko, Y., Wilson, R., Dalbeth, N., Abbott, J. H., & Stamp, L. (2025). Cost-effectiveness of low dose colchicine prophylaxis when starting allopurinol using the “start-low go-slow” approach for gout: Evidence from a non-inferiority randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial.
