Professor Russell Conduit serves as Assistant Associate Dean of Psychology in the Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences at RMIT University, Bundoora campus. He earned his PhD in Psychology from La Trobe University in 2000. Prior to his current role, Conduit was a Lecturer in the School of Psychology and Psychiatry at Monash University from 2002 to 2014. His academic career has focused on advancing knowledge in sleep science and related psychological processes.
Conduit's research interests encompass psychophysiological indicators of fatigue and human performance, sleep disorders and their treatments, the effects of sleep on learning and memory, complementary and alternative medicine for sleep issues, and sleep patterns in vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and individuals with autism spectrum disorder. He has produced over 100 peer-reviewed publications, accumulating more than 3,500 citations on Google Scholar. Key works include 'The relationship between sleep and behavior in autism spectrum disorder (ASD): a review' (Cohen et al., 2014, Journal of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, cited over 500 times), 'Sleep patterns predictive of daytime challenging behavior in individuals with low-functioning autism' (Cohen et al., 2018, Autism Research), 'The relationship between shift-work, sleep, and mental health among paramedics' (Khan et al., 2020, Sleep Health, cited 177 times), and recent studies on acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine for insomnia management (e.g., Zhao et al., 2025). Conduit supervises Masters and PhD students on projects related to cognition, mental health, sleep interventions, and alternative therapies. He is recognized as an international expert in sleep research, contributing to media discussions on topics such as melatonin efficacy and sleep-related health issues.
