J. Russell (Rusty) May, Pharm.D., FASHP, serves as Clinical Professor in the Department of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy at the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy's Augusta campus. He received his B.S. in 1978 and Pharm.D. along with a pharmacy residency in 1981 from the University of Kentucky. May's academic interests include drug information services, drug literature evaluation, formulary management, drug policy development and management, pharmacy residency training programs, evaluation of new drugs, allergic rhinitis, drug allergies and pseudoallergies, and infectious diseases clinical pharmacy services. He welcomes collaboration opportunities with master's students on clinical projects.
May has earned recognition for his contributions to pharmacy education and practice, including membership on the ASHP Expert Panel on Medication Use Policy Management in 2006, election as a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (FASHP), the College of Pharmacy Teacher of the Year award in 2007, and the Distinguished Drug Information Pharmacist award in 2014. His scholarly output encompasses peer-reviewed articles such as "Residency scramble: Program directors’ experiences with the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service" in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy (2014) and "Examination of the relationship between antimicrobials and thrombocytosis" in the Annals of Pharmacotherapy (2012). He has contributed book chapters including "Adverse Drug Reactions and Interactions" and "Allergic Rhinitis" in Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach (various editions), "Formulary Systems" in the Encyclopedia of Clinical Pharmacy (2002), and "Introduction to the Concept of Drug Information" in Drug Information: A Guide for Pharmacists (sixth edition). May frequently presents on formulary approaches to new drugs at conferences, grand rounds, and continuing education programs, such as the Georgia Pharmacy Association Summer Meeting and University Hospital Medical Staff Continuing Education.
