Ruth Jardine serves as a Clinical Research Nurse at the Christchurch Heart Institute, a research centre of the University of Otago located within the Department of Medicine in Christchurch. With qualifications including RGN (UK), RGON (NZ), and BN, she holds a strong foundation in nursing practice from both the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Her professional focus centers on clinical research in cardiovascular health.
In her role, Jardine contributes to projects examining the incidence, impact, and treatment of cardiovascular disease in the community. As a member of the Christchurch Heart Institute's clinical research team, she supports investigations into the neurohumoral aspects of common cardiovascular conditions, including myocardial infarction, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure. The team participates in multi-centre clinical trials of experimental treatments for these conditions. This aligns with the Department of Medicine's emphasis on research alongside medical education for undergraduate clinical attachments and postgraduate programmes. Jardine has co-authored relevant publications, including the 2018 conference abstract 'The TNF receptor TACI is a novel inflammatory predictor of heart failure' in the European Heart Journal (39 Suppl. 1, pp. 576-577), representing the Christchurch Heart Institute. She also contributed to the 2014 randomized clinical trial 'A 2-Hour Diagnostic Protocol for Possible Cardiac Chest Pain in the Emergency Department: A Randomized Clinical Trial' published in JAMA Internal Medicine, assisting with patient recruitment, phlebotomy, and telephone follow-up at Christchurch Hospital. Additionally, she liaises with the Emergency Department to recruit participants for heart failure discharge management studies and participates in team activities such as the City2Surf event.
