Dr Sophie Nightingale is Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Lancaster University. Her research interests concern the fast-moving area of digital technology and its effects on memory, cognition, and behaviour. She frequently combines methodological techniques from experimental psychology and computer science to address topical issues, such as identity fraud, online harm, forensic identification, and applied artificial intelligence. Her research has implications for policy and practice within many domains and aims to ensure that technology is used in a manner that promotes fairness and wellbeing for all. In addition to the real-world applications, her findings contribute to theoretical understanding of human perception and models of memory processing.

Dr Nightingale is involved in multiple research projects including Lancaster University Policing Academic Centre of Excellence from 2025 to 2028, Mapping and mitigating the threats to ordinary people from deep fakes from 2024 to 2028, Older adults’ vulnerability to deception in new digital technologies from 2024 to 2028, NetworkPlus for Analytical Behavioural Science in Security and Defence from 2024 to 2027, and several others focused on computational social science, biometric AI, QR code fraud, and metaverse identity. She has delivered invited talks and oral presentations on topics including Facing up to AI and the effect of AI and human guidance on decision making.
