About Sam

Sam Manuela is an Associate Professor in the School of Psychology within the Faculty of Science at the University of Auckland. He completed a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science with Honours, a master’s degree, and a PhD specialising in Pacific Psychology at the University of Auckland, graduating with his doctorate in 2016 after receiving the University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship. His research focuses on measuring ethnic identity derived from Pacific knowledge and integrating it with traditional psychology methods. He has led projects including a Marsden grant examining how Pacific psychologists integrate their training and indigenous knowledge into practice, and a Health Research Council-funded survey of mental health in the Cook Islands. Manuela serves as Associate Dean Pacific in the Faculty of Science and supervises PhD students while mentoring Pacific students. He previously held the position of Senior Lecturer and developed the first Pacific identity and wellbeing measure.
