Sam Stemper is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Economics at the University of Auckland, within the Faculty of Business and Economics. He earned his PhD in Public Policy/Economics from Harvard University in 2023. His research focuses on labour economics and the economics of education, with particular interests in human capital development, technology, and management. Stemper’s work examines topics such as the links between high school mathematics performance on international assessments and adult educational and economic outcomes, as well as the effects of economic shocks and technology access on skill acquisition and student achievement.
Prior to his appointment at the University of Auckland, Stemper completed his doctoral studies at Harvard. He has contributed to peer-reviewed publications including “Trends in International Assessments and Outcomes in Adulthood” in the Economics of Education Review (2025) and “Economic Shocks and Skill Acquisition: Evidence from a National Online Learning Platform at the Onset of COVID-19” (with co-authors) in Labour Economics (2024). His research has been referenced in university communications and policy-related discussions on education and labour markets. Stemper maintains an active profile in academic networks and continues to advance empirical work in his areas of specialization.
