Sarah Ahrens, MD, serves as Clinical Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine within the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison. A dedicated hospitalist, she focuses on inpatient medicine, caring for adult patients with complex conditions including stroke and heart issues. She obtained her MD from the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals in Seattle. At UW-Madison, Dr. Ahrens has built a distinguished career in clinical practice and medical education. She directs the Inpatient Acting Internship for the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, oversees Phase 3 curriculum for the Department of Medicine, and acts as Vice Chair of the Student Performance and Review Committee. Her active involvement in teaching medical students and residents underscores her commitment to developing future physicians. As a Sarnoff Fellow alumna, she has mentored students successfully through the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation Fellowship application process, providing guidance and connections to secure the prestigious awards.
Dr. Ahrens has earned widespread recognition for her excellence in humanism, teaching, and service. In 2019, she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society by UW medical students and received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award at the white coat ceremony. Additional honors include the Department of Medicine Schilling-Harkness Teaching Award, Grossman-Page Professionalism Award, Division of Hospital Medicine Teaching Award and Exemplary Service Award, and Professionalism Award from the Department of Medicine housestaff. Her contributions to the literature include co-authorship on 'Transitioning from General Pediatric to Adult-Oriented Inpatient Care: Priorities of Pediatric Hospital Medicine Leaders' published in the Journal of Hospital Medicine in 2018, and 'Priorities and Outcomes for Youth-Adult Transitions in Hospital Care: Perspectives of Inpatient Clinical Leaders at US Children’s Hospitals' in Hospital Pediatrics in 2020. Through these efforts and leadership in educational initiatives, Dr. Ahrens significantly impacts medical training and patient-centered care in hospital medicine.
