Scott Dooley, M.F.A., is Professor of Art and Chair of the Department of Art at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Born and raised in Hutchinson, Kansas, he graduated summa cum laude from Bethel College with majors in history, philosophy, and German, and a minor in Bible and religion, in 1993. Upon discovering clay as a senior, he worked as an assistant at Voth Pottery for one year before pursuing art studies, earning credits at Arizona State University. In 2000, he received his Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics from Kansas State University, where he studied with Yoshiro Ikeda. Dooley joined Wittenberg University in 2000 as Assistant Professor of Art, advancing to Associate Professor in 2006 and Professor in 2013. He has chaired the Art Department from 2010 to 2016 and since 2020. Additional appointments include Hagen Center Community Engagement Faculty Fellow from 2017 to 2021, director of the Ann Miller Gallery from 2003 to 2010, faculty advisor for the Wittenberg Review of Art and Literature from 2003 to 2014, and coordinator of the university's Empty Bowls event since 2000, which raised over $41,735 in 2013 for the Second Harvest Food Bank.
Dooley's ceramic artwork has been exhibited internationally in Spain, Switzerland, Australia, South Africa, China, Croatia, Portugal, and Taiwan, as well as throughout the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, with participation in over 270 exhibitions from 1998 to 2024 and 41 awards. His pieces are held in 34 permanent collections, such as the Gloria and Sonny Kamm Teapot Foundation, Ron Pizzuti Collection, Yixing Ceramics Museum in China, Museu de Ceramica de Manises in Spain, and Taipei County Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taiwan. Major honors include the Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship in 2005, Edith B. and Frank C. Matthies Award in 2017, SOCHE Faculty Excellence Award in 2017, Excellence in Community Service Award in 2012, and Richard R. Scott Award in 2002. His work has appeared in Ceramics Monthly (feature article, November 2002), Claytimes, Pottery Making Illustrated, Revista Internacional Ceramica, Kerameiki Techni, Ceramics: Art and Perception, The National Ceramics Quarterly, and books like 500 Teapots: Contemporary Explorations of a Timeless Design, 500 Pitchers: Contemporary Explorations of a Classic Form, Clay and Glazes for the Potter, and Eva Zeisel On Design. Dooley has served on the Ohio Designer Craftsmen Board of Directors from 2012 to 2016 and the Springfield Peace Center Board of Directors, and produced the instructional DVD Handbuilding Modular Forms with Stiff Slabs.
