Dr Scott Niblock is a Senior Lecturer in Finance within the Faculty of Business, Law and Arts at Southern Cross University. He earned a Bachelor of Business with First Class Honours and a Doctor of Philosophy in Finance from the same institution. Before entering academia full-time, he served as a client advisor and wealth manager in the stockbroking sector, achieving high-level accreditation in stocks and derivatives. Currently, he holds key administrative roles as the Undergraduate Business Course Coordinator, BBA Course Coordinator, and Academic Lead in Financial Services.
Niblock teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in investments and portfolio management, finance for business, and behavioural finance and client relationships. His research specializations include the behavioural drivers of financial advice seeking, financial decision making, responsible investing, and financial wellbeing, particularly focusing on financial abuse within intimate partner relationships. He has contributed to leading journals such as the Journal of Consumer Affairs, Australian Journal of Management, and Journal of Sustainable Finance & Investment. Key publications encompass "On the relationship between financial and non-financial factors: A case study analysis of financial failure predictors of agribusiness firms in Australia" (2015, Agricultural Finance Review), "Are organizations destined to fail?" (2016, Management Research Review), "Financial advice seeking: A review of the barriers and benefits" (2020, Economic Papers), and "ESG and the performance of energy and utility portfolios: evidence from Australia" (2024, Studies in Economics and Finance). He has supervised seven higher degree by research candidates and two honours students to completion and has secured numerous competitive research grants, including AFAANZ grants. Niblock actively engages with the financial services industry, consulting for the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), The Treasury, and Financial Adviser Standards (FAS), and participates in the Faculty's Accounting and Finance Curriculum Advisory Group. He is a member of the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ), Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA), and the Financial Planning Academics Forum (FPAF).
