Scott Paeth serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at DePaul University, where he began teaching in 2004. Within the Theology faculty, his scholarship focuses on Christian Ethics and Public Theology, including business ethics, bioethics, and the ethics of war and peace. He holds a Ph.D. in Theology and Ethics from Princeton Theological Seminary. Paeth is the author or editor of eight books and numerous articles. Key publications include The Niebuhr Brothers for Armchair Theologians (Westminster John Knox Press, 2013), Public Theology for a Global Society: Essays in Honor of Max Stackhouse (Eerdmans, 2010), Exodus Church and Civil Society: Public Theology and Social Theory in the Work of Jurgen Moltmann (Ashgate, 2008), Who Do You Say That I Am? Christology and Identity in the United Church of Christ (United Church Press, 2006), Religious Perspectives on Business Ethics: An Anthology (Sheed & Ward, 2006), and The Local Church in a Global Era: Reflections for a New Century (Eerdmans, 2000). Recent works feature chapters such as "Theology of Culture as Public Theology: Paul Tillich and the Social Ethics of Religious Experience" in The Political Theology of Paul Tillich (Bloomsbury Publishing Plc., 2024) and "This Present Darkness: War and the Doctrine of Creation" in T&T Clark Handbook of the Doctrine of Creation (Bloomsbury Publishing Plc., 2024). He is currently developing a book entitled Christianity and the Economic Crisis.
Paeth serves as co-editor of the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics and editor of the Journal of Religion and Business Ethics, contributing significantly to the field through editorial leadership. His honors include the Brandeis University Schusterman Fellowship in Israel Studies (2009) and the DePaul University Wicklander Fellowship (2008-2009). As an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, he has worked with organizations such as SCUPE/OMNIA, Interfaith Playdate, Chicago Interfaith Worker Justice, and the Confessing Christ National Steering Committee. Paeth has lectured internationally in Beirut, Lebanon; Pune, India; and Dunedin, New Zealand. He has authored editorials for newspapers and appeared on PBS’s Religion and Ethics Newsweekly. Additionally, he directs the Center for Religion, Culture, and Community and participates in Religious Studies, Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies at DePaul University.
