Sean Brawley is an Honorary Professor in the School of Humanities within the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University, where he has held the title of Professor since joining the institution in 1988. He served as Head of the Department of Modern History, Politics, and International Relations and as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Programs and Pathways) from 2017 to 2022. In these leadership positions, he advanced curriculum lifecycle frameworks, learning and teaching quality assurance processes, and international collaborations, such as the Masters of Global Governance and Security co-convened with Plymouth University and Britannia Royal Naval College. Brawley has also contributed to higher education initiatives through roadshows for program pathways and peer review internationalization in teaching.
His research specializations include modern history topics such as Australia-Asia relations, White Australia immigration policies, Pacific War experiences, African American troops in World War II Australia, surf lifesaving and sports history, terrorism studies, and the scholarship of teaching and learning in history. As principal chief investigator, he led projects like "Australia's Asian Garrisons and Regional Engagement, 1945-1988," "Mrs O'Keefe and the Battle for White Australia: The O'Keefe Deportation Case of 1949," and studies on Australian shopping centre development. Key publications encompass "The White Peril: Foreign Relations and Asian Immigration to Australasia and North America, 1919-1978" (1995), "Beach Beyond: A History of the Palm Beach Surf Club 1921-1996" (1996), "The Bondi Lifesaver: A History of an Australian Icon" (2007), "Hollywood's South Seas and the Pacific War: Searching for Dorothy Lamour" (2012), "The South Seas: A Reception History from Daniel Defoe to Dorothy Lamour" (2015, with Chris Dixon), and "Fandom, Place Protection, and Urban Planning: Two Sporting Case Studies" (2023, with Erik Nielsen). Brawley has produced 76 research outputs, including 7 books, 36 articles, and 18 chapters. His honors include Principal Fellowship of the Advance HE Academy (2018) and election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales (FRSN).
