Dr. Sean Hanna serves as a Senior Professional Practice Fellow at the University of Otago's Centre for Rural Health, where he acts as Faculty Development and Education Adviser for the Rural Medical Immersion Programme (RMIP). He is affiliated with the Department of Primary Health Care and General Practice within the Faculty of Medicine, Health Sciences Division. Hanna holds the degrees of MB ChB from the University of Auckland, Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education (PGDipClinEd) from the University of Auckland, and Postgraduate Diploma in General Practice (PGDipGP) from the University of Otago. He is also a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (FRNZCGP). As a General Practitioner at Ora Toa Health Services in Porirua since 2002, particularly serving Takapūwāhia Pā, he has accumulated over two decades of clinical experience in primary health care. For more than ten years, he has contributed to medical education at the University of Otago in Wellington, previously holding the position of Assistant Director for Faculty Development in the Wellington-based Rural Immersion Programme. His career emphasizes clinical practice, faculty development, and education in rural and general practice settings.
Hanna's academic interests include medical education and primary health care sustainability. He co-authored the 2022 publication 'The concentration of complexity: case mix in New Zealand general practice and the sustainability of primary care' in the Journal of Primary Health Care, collaborating with researchers from the University of Otago's Department of Primary Health Care and General Practice, Tū Ora Compass Health, Ora Toa Health Services, the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, and Datacraft Analytics. This study examined disparities in patient needs across general practices, supporting calls for funding reforms. Additionally, he contributed to 'Developing the One-Minute Preceptor' published in The Clinical Teacher in 2012, originating from the Medical Education Unit at the University of Otago, Wellington. In 2022, Hanna received the Distinguished Fellowship from the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners in recognition of his service to general practice. Through his roles in RMIP and faculty development, he supports the training of medical students in rural immersion contexts, enhancing clinical teaching and educational practices.
