Seth Adjei is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department at Northern Kentucky University, part of the School of Computing and Analytics in the College of Informatics. He joined the university in Fall 2018 after teaching positions at Salem State University in Massachusetts and GIMPA in Ghana. Adjei earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in May 2018 and an M.Sc. in Information Systems Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. His research centers on educational data mining, artificial intelligence in education, adaptive learning systems, student modeling, learning analytics, and skill relationship modeling. He focuses on improving student learning outcomes, particularly for low-achieving students, through the collection and analysis of educational data and effective sequencing of educational materials. Adjei contributed to the development of the PLACEments adaptive testing system, which identifies student deficiencies in math topics and assigns remedial exercises within the ASSISTments ecosystem.
Adjei's scholarly work appears in prestigious venues such as IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education, International Conference on Learning Analytics & Knowledge, and International Conference on Educational Data Mining. Key publications include 'Developing Early Detectors of Student Attrition and Wheel Spinning Using Deep Learning' (Botelho et al., IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, 2019), 'Seven-year longitudinal implications of wheel spinning and productive persistence' (Adjei et al., AIED 2021), 'Sequencing content in an adaptive testing system: the role of choice' (Adjei et al., LAK 2017), 'Modeling Interactions Across Skills: A Method to Construct and Compare Models Predicting the Existence of Skill Relationships' (Botelho et al., EDM 2016), and 'Improving Learning Maps Using an Adaptive Testing System: PLACEments' (Adjei and Heffernan, AIED 2015). He teaches courses in computer programming, database management systems, and software engineering. Adjei is a native of Ghana and resides in Mason, Ohio, with his family.
