About Shae

Professor Shae McCrystal is Professor of Labour Law at the University of Sydney Law School. Her academic interests centre on labour law, including collective bargaining, the regulation of industrial action and the right to strike, the legal challenges of platform work in the gig economy, and the intersection of labour law with competition and consumer law. McCrystal teaches labour law and property law. She joined the University of Sydney in 2007 after several years in the College of Law at the Australian National University. She has held the position of Deputy Head of School.

McCrystal's scholarly output includes the monograph The Right to Strike in Australia (Federation Press, 2010), which examines the historical and contemporary regulation of strike action. She co-authored Beyond Employment: The Legal Regulation of Work Relationships (Federation Press, 2011) with Breen Creighton and William B. Stewart. Other significant publications are Why is it so hard to take lawful strike action in Australia? (Journal of Industrial Relations, 2019), The importance of competition and consumer law in regulating gig work (Journal of Industrial Relations, 2022, with Tess Hardy), Collective Bargaining in Fissured Work Contexts (Federal Law Review, 2023), and contributions to The Cambridge Handbook of Labor in Competition Law (Cambridge University Press, 2023). She is a Chief Investigator on Australian Research Council Linkage Project LE170100099 with Mark Bray, Peter Sheldon, and others. In 2024, McCrystal received the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in the Sydney Leaders category for her mentorship and leadership. She delivered the Annual Phillipa Weeks Lecture at the Australian National University College of Law in 2024. McCrystal contributes to the Australian Journal of Labour Law.
