Associate Professor Shahed Khan has been affiliated with Curtin University since 2007 in the School of Design and the Built Environment, where he served as Head of the Department of Planning and Geography and Director of International and Alumni Engagement. His academic background includes a PhD in Urban Planning from the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Hawai‘i, and a Bachelor of Architecture from NED University of Engineering and Technology in Pakistan. With over four decades in urban planning education and practice across Asia and Australia, he practiced as an architect and urban planner before joining academia, teaching architecture and urban planning courses in universities in Asia.
Shahed Khan's research specializations include urban governance and sustainable development, informal settlements and housing policy, transit-oriented development, community engagement and participatory planning, global and mega cities in the Global South, intercultural planning, and climate change adaptation. He has authored or co-authored over 50 publications, including book chapters with Springer and Routledge, and articles in journals such as Cities, Habitat International, and Urban Policy and Research. Key publications are "Placemaking in Informal Settlements: The Case of France Colony, Islamabad, Pakistan" (2021), "Urban informality and parallel governance systems: shaping citizens’ engagements in urban planning processes in Bangladesh" (2021), and "Sustainable Mobility through Safer Roads: Translating Road Safety Strategy into Local Context in Western Australia" (2020). He has supervised PhD theses on topics from climate change adaptation and transport equity to social housing and informal settlements in Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Khan's influence extends to editorial boards of the International Journal of Built Environment and Sustainability and Asian Studies, advisory roles to governments in Pakistan and Bangladesh, collaborations with UN-Habitat and UN ESCAP, leadership in Curtin’s Japan Study Tours (2008–2019), initiation of MOUs with Japanese universities, and applied research for Western Australian local governments including the City of Vincent and Pilbara Planning Commission. He received the Curtin Excellence Award for Global Citizenship and Internationalisation and served as Track Chair at World Planning Schools Congresses.
