Shannon Everest serves as a Lecturer in the Midwifery discipline within the Faculty of Health at Southern Cross University. She also holds concurrent roles as Teaching Associate, Research Associate, and Editing Assistant for Open Educational Resources (OER) in the Faculty of Health. These positions enable her to contribute to both teaching and research activities in midwifery and related health sciences. Everest earned her Bachelor of Midwifery from Griffith University and a Graduate Certificate in Maternal Critical Care from Charles Darwin University. These qualifications provide a strong foundation in clinical midwifery practice and specialized care in critical maternal situations, which she applies in her academic capacities at Southern Cross University, particularly at the Gold Coast campus.
Her academic interests and research specializations lie in maternal mental health, with a particular emphasis on childbirth-related trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Everest is a key collaborator on the International Survey of Childbirth-Related Trauma (INTERSECT) study, which investigates cross-national risk factors associated with PTSD following childbirth. This multinational project involves partners from various institutions worldwide. She is a co-author on significant publications stemming from this research, including 'Cross-national risk factors for childbirth-related PTSD: findings from the INTERSECT study,' published in Psychological Medicine in 2025, and 'A brief international screening tool for traumatic birth and childbirth-related PTSD symptoms (CityBiTS),' published in 2025. Furthermore, Everest co-authored contributions to the 44th Annual Conference of the Society for Reproductive and Infant Psychology (SRIP) held from September 16 to 18, 2024, presenting alongside colleagues Beata Gidaszewski, James Elhindi, Julia Marsden, Annabel Sheehy, and Dharmintra Pasupathy from Southern Cross University on topics related to reproductive and infant psychology. Prior to these endeavors, she worked as Research Project Officer at Southern Cross University from July 2023 to March 2024. As a registered midwife, her practical expertise informs her educational and scholarly work, advancing knowledge in midwifery education and psychological aspects of perinatal care.
