Shannon Lipscomb, PhD, is a Professor in the School of Human Development and Family Sciences and Associate Dean of Research for OSU-Cascades at Oregon State University, College of Health. She received her PhD in Human Development and Family Science from the University of California, Davis in 2007 and her BA in Psychology, magna cum laude, from Whitman College in 2000, where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Lipscomb joined Oregon State University-Cascades in 2010 as Assistant Professor in the School of Social and Behavioral Health Sciences, advancing to Associate Professor in 2016 and full Professor in 2024. Previously, she owned and served as Senior Researcher at Dynamic Research and Evaluation in Bend, OR (2006-2012), and held research positions at Zetetic Associates, Oregon Social Learning Center, and the University of California, Davis.
Her research specializes in promoting resilience among young children and families facing adversity, with key interests in the role of early childhood education for children involved in child welfare, foster care, or trauma; the interplay of children's risks and early experiences on development; and early childhood programs and systems. Specific areas include resilience processes, trauma-responsive early care and education, adverse childhood experiences and family processes, early care and education quality and stability, school readiness for children in non-parental care, and executive function and social behaviors in preschool children. Notable publications include "Impacts of Roots of Resilience professional development for early childhood teachers on young children's protective factors" (Early Childhood Research Quarterly, 2021), "Profiles of adverse childhood experiences and family processes during early childhood" (Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, 2022), "Building Cultures of Care in Schools" (Journal of Contemporary School Psychology, 2023), and "Cultural and Language Socialization as Resilience-Promoting Factors for Executive Function..." (Frontiers in Psychology, 2023). Lipscomb has earned the Scholarship and Creative Activity Award from Oregon State University-Cascades (2013), Public Voices Fellowship (2022), and various award nominations. She leads as Guest Editor for a special issue of Frontiers in Psychology on resilience (2023) and serves on committees such as the OSU Associate Deans for Research Council and Early Care and Education Task Force.
