About Shanti

Shanti Deemyad is an experimental condensed matter physicist and Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Utah. She directs the Deemyad Lab in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, where her group investigates the properties of quantum materials under extreme high-pressure conditions using diamond anvil cells. Her research encompasses superconductivity, phase transitions, melting curves, Fermi surface topology, and structural stability in light elements such as lithium, hydrogen, sodium, and iron, as well as in complex materials like perovskites and ferromagnetic insulators. These studies reveal quantum effects, isotope dependencies, and novel phenomena like polar metals and coexistence of vitreous and crystalline phases.

Deemyad's key publications include the superconducting phase diagram of lithium metal up to 67 GPa (Physical Review Letters, 2003), the high-pressure melting line of hydrogen (Physical Review Letters, 2008), high-pressure melting of lithium (Physical Review Letters, 2012), quantum and isotope effects in lithium metal (Science, 2017), boundaries for martensitic transition of 7Li under pressure (Nature Communications, 2015), high-pressure superconducting phase diagram of 6Li (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2015), evidence from Fermi surface analysis for lithium's low-temperature structure (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2017), pressure-induced ferroelectric-like transition creating a polar metal (Nature Communications, 2021), coexistence of vitreous and crystalline phases of H2O at ambient temperature (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2022), and measuring the elasticity of pressurized iron (Physics, 2023). Her scholarship has garnered over 1,400 citations, influencing advancements in high-pressure physics and condensed matter science. Deemyad chaired the 2016 Gordon Research Conference on High Pressure Science, highlighting her leadership in the field. She mentors graduate and undergraduate students and contributes to the department's research and teaching efforts.
