Sharmila Makhija, MD, MBA, is the Founding Dean, Chief Executive Officer, and Professor at Alice L. Walton School of Medicine. As a surgeon and academic leader with expertise in medicine, she is an international expert on maternal health and gynecologic oncology, working with health systems and institutional partners to enhance medical education and prepare students for health care roles.
Dr. Makhija earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Cornell University, her MD from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, completed residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Louisville Hospital, fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and an Executive MBA from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School. Prior to her current appointment, she was Department Chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health, Professor of Gynecologic Oncology, and Chella and Moise Safra Endowed Chair at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System. She held faculty positions at the University of Pittsburgh as a Women’s Reproductive Health Research Scholar, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as tenured associate professor and recipient of the Argus Teaching Award, at Emory University as Division Chief of Gynecologic Oncology, Leach Endowed Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar, and at the University of Louisville School of Medicine as Department Chair of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health, tenured Professor of Gynecologic Oncology, Donald E. Baxter Endowed Chair, and Chief Medical and Operations Officer for the Center for Women and Infants. A graduate of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program, she has advised and mentored women in medicine, completed a term on the Clinical Leadership Committee of the American Hospital Association, chairs the Impact Committee of Every Mother Counts, and serves as Associate Editor-in-Chief of JAAPI. Awards include Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Spirit of Achievement, Good Housekeeping Humanitarian Hero, Crain’s New York Business Notable Health Care Leader, and AAPI Health Care Hero Honoree.
