About Sharon

Sharon Taylor is a Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Georgia Southern University. Her academic career at the institution spans over two decades, during which she has held leadership positions including Chair and Interim Chair of the department from 2014 to 2016. Taylor's scholarly work centers on mathematics education, with a particular emphasis on preservice teachers' conceptual understanding of statistical measures and modeling in geometry and functions. She maintains an h-index of 9 based on her Scopus profile. Notable publications include 'K-8 Preservice Teachers' Statistical Thinking When Determining Best Measures of Center' (2023, co-authored with Ha Nguyen, Eryn M. Stehr Maher, and Gregory Chamblee), which explores statistical reasoning among future educators; 'Conceptualizing and Interpreting Mean and Median With Future Teachers' (2019, with Eryn M. Stehr, Ha Nguyen, and Gregory Chamblee); 'Basic Skills Testing in Math 2008' (co-authored with Susie M. Lanier and Donna B. Saye); 'Tennis Balls, Lines, and Geometric Transformations' (2010); 'Riding the Ferris Wheel: A Sinusoidal Model' (co-authored with Kathleen Cage Mittag); 'Mean, Median, or Mode: Which One Is My Pencil?' (co-authored with Kathleen Cage Mittag); 'Using Real Data for Z-Scores and Confidence Intervals' (co-authored with Kathleen Cage Mittag and L. R. Zientek); and 'Developing Consistency in the Terminology and Display of Summary Statistics' (2014, co-authored with Patricia B. Humphrey and others). These works contribute to enhancing pedagogical approaches in K-12 mathematics teacher preparation.

Taylor has significantly impacted the field through her involvement with the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE), where she has served as former president, chaired proceedings committees, and contributed to the editorial board. Her presentations cover topics such as professional development differences for elementary versus high school teachers, virtual manipulatives in sustainability education, and the use of real data in statistics instruction. In recognition of her long-term dedication, she received a 20 Years of Service award from Georgia Southern University in 2021-2022. Additionally, she has collaborated on grants and projects focused on mathematics education research and teacher training within the university's College of Science and Mathematics.
