Dr. Shaun Counsell is a Professional Practice Fellow in the Department of Primary Health Care and General Practice at the University of Otago Wellington, within the Faculty of Medicine in the Health Sciences Division. His qualifications include MB ChB, FRNZCGP, FRNZCUC, and PGDipTravMed. As a general practitioner and urgent care doctor, he splits his time between academic responsibilities at the university, a travel medicine service, and an urgent care clinic. He has clinical experience from work in the Solomon Islands and other Pacific countries.
Counsell's research centers on tuberculosis, particularly in the context of migration. He completed a Master of Health Sciences at the University of Otago in 2021 with the thesis titled 'New Home: New Zealand Health of Migrants and Tuberculosis Elimination.' This work, approved ethically in 2017, addresses migrant health and TB elimination strategies in New Zealand. He presented on this study at the Migration, Health and Wellbeing conference hosted by the Centre for Global Migrant Health in 2019. He is a member of the Otago Global Health Institute.
In teaching, Dr. Counsell co-convenes postgraduate papers GENA719 Tropical Infectious Disease and PRHC702 Wilderness and Expedition Medicine, which are elective components of the Postgraduate Diploma in Travel Medicine and Postgraduate Diploma in Primary Health Care. His practical background in travel medicine, tropical infectious diseases, and expedition medicine informs his contributions to these programmes, supporting the training of healthcare professionals in specialized areas.
