Dr. Shawn Leu is a Senior Lecturer in Macroeconomics and Deputy Head of School in the UNE Business School, University of New England. He holds a BA/BCom from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and MEc (Hons) and PhD from the University of Sydney. Prior to his current role, he served as Senior Lecturer at La Trobe University School of Economics from 2004 to 2014 and held visiting positions at the International Monetary Fund, Macquarie University, and University of Cincinnati.
Dr. Leu specializes in applied macroeconometrics, international finance, monetary economics, open economy macroeconomics, and regional economics. His key publications include "Mortgage credit volumes and monetary policy after the Great Recession" (Economic Modelling, 2021, with M. Robertson), "Examining the effects of zero dollar unemployment payment penalties" (Economic Record, 2020, with A. Wright, B. Dollery, M. Kortt), "The effect of varying sanction values on future compliance with unemployment benefit requirements: An empirical analysis using Australian administrative data" (Public Administration Quarterly, 2021, with A. Wright et al.), "Forest cover change, households’ livelihoods, trade-offs, and constraints associated with plantation forests in poor upland-rural landscapes: Evidence from north central Vietnam" (Forests, 2020), "A New Keynesian SVAR model of the Australian economy" (Economic Modelling, 2011), "Asymmetric monetary policy in Australia" (Economic Record, 2006, with J. Sheen), and the book "Exchange rate management and monetary policy in Australia: An examination of the post-float era" (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, 2008). Recent works encompass "Technical efficiency, scale effect, and trade liberalization: evidence from the Nepalese manufacturing sector" (2024) and "Natural resource extraction and environmental sustainability in Africa: The role of voice and accountability" (2024). He supervises PhD students on trade liberalisation and regional innovation systems, teaches ECON102, ECON202, and ECON409, and contributes to consultancies like the Australian Organic Market Report (2018). Memberships include the American Economic Association, Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society, and Economic Society of Australia (NSW branch).
