Shelley Lane is an associate professor of communication studies in the School of Arts and Humanities at The University of Texas at Dallas. She has served as associate dean of undergraduate studies and interim associate dean in the same school, playing a pivotal role in undergraduate education and program development. Lane holds a Ph.D., M.A. from UT Dallas in 1994, and B.A. from the University of Texas at Dallas in 1992. Her academic career at UT Dallas includes teaching courses such as Interpersonal Communication (COMM 3311), Freshman Seminar, and Student Leadership (UNIV 4074 and UNIV 4076), where she emphasized skills in public speaking, audience adaptation, and leadership development.
Lane's research specializations encompass interpersonal communication, public speaking, interpersonal relationships, nonverbal communication, social communication, cross-cultural psychology, and communication. Her key publications include 'Empathy and Assertive Communication' (1981), which reviews the relationship between empathy and assertiveness; 'Compliance, Satisfaction, and Physician-Patient Communication' (1983); 'Interpersonal Orientations: A Review, Synthesis and Critique' (1983), examining characteristic ways individuals interact; 'The Development of a Skill Mastery Assessment for a Basic Speech Course' (1998), detailing an interpersonal skill assessment instrument; and 'The Audience Adaptation Infomercial Speech' (2009), focusing on audience analysis techniques. These works have collectively received 46 citations. Lane was honored at the 2008 Faculty Author Reception for her publications and in 2015 alongside faculty and students for creative works. She contributed to university initiatives, including a certificate program to hone students' communication skills, a crash course on U.S. life for international students, freshman volunteer projects, and the Quality Enhancement Plan topic selection committee. Her dedication was recognized in 2012 among long-serving university members. Lane's efforts have enhanced the intellectual and cultural environment in Communications through lectures, activities, and student mentoring.
