Sherri L. Porcelain serves as Senior Lecturer of Global Public Health in World Affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami. She earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida and a Master of Public Health from the University of Miami in 1986. Since 1986, Porcelain has been affiliated with the Department of Public Health Sciences at the Miller School of Medicine as part of the Voluntary Faculty, currently holding the position of Voluntary Instructor in the UMMG Department of Public Health Sciences Research. She also works as an adjunct professor in International Studies and as a Senior Research Associate at the University of Miami Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies, focusing on public health issues. Porcelain directs the University of Miami's F.E.S.T. Disaster Research Program in Global Public Health and has collaborated on initiatives addressing infectious disease threats among indigenous populations, such as the Kuna Indians.
Porcelain's research specializations encompass global health policy and ethics, disasters, terrorism, humanitarian emergencies, and their effects on human health. Her academic interests include mosquito-borne illnesses, cholera outbreaks in Cuba, and parasitic diseases. She organized the 2014 World Health Day seminar titled 'Small Bite, Big Threat' at the University of Miami to investigate mosquito-borne illnesses. Key publications co-authored by Porcelain include 'Permethrin 5% dermal cream: A new treatment for scabies' (1986), 'Comparative Efficacy of Treatments for Pediculosis Capitis Infestations' (1987), 'Dengue in Costa Rica: the gap in local scientific research,' and contributions to studies on ivermectin resistance in Sarcoptes scabiei. She has published analyses on Cuba's public health challenges, such as 'U.S. & Cuba: a question of indifference?' in Cuba Insight (2017). Porcelain teaches graduate and undergraduate courses including INS 573: Disasters, Terrorism and Global Public Health, Global Health Policy & Ethics, and Public Health in Ticantiki (Panama). Her work supports education and research on ethical dimensions of national, regional, and global health policies, with emphasis on human rights issues.
