Shuhua An is a Professor of Mathematics Education in the Teacher Education Department, College of Education, at California State University, Long Beach, where she has been on the faculty since 2000 and currently serves as Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Mathematics Education. She earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Texas A&M University in 2000, an M.B.A. in International Finance from Texas A&M International University in 1993, and a B.A. in Mathematics from Nanjing Normal University in 1985. Prior to her position at CSULB, An taught mathematics at Bryan High School in Bryan, Texas (1998–2000) and Martin High School in Laredo, Texas (1994–1998). With over 30 years of teaching experience in math and mathematics education across various levels in China and the United States, her research specializations include mathematics teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge, classroom teaching research, assessment of student mathematics thinking, technology integration in education, and comparative studies of mathematics teaching and learning between the U.S. and Asian countries.
Since 2008, An has led the international Classroom Teaching Research for All Students (CTRAS) Research Group, involving more than 30 universities from seven countries, and organized its annual conferences from 2009 to 2015. She is the author of books including 'Teaching Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Using the MSA Approach: Model, Strategy, and Application' (multiple editions, up to 4th ed., 2019), 'The Middle Path in Math Instruction - Solutions for Improving Math Education,' and 'Chinese Mathematics Lesson Study' (in press as of 2015). Selected publications encompass 'The impact of STEAM integration on pre-service teachers’ disposition and knowledge' (2020, Journal of Research in Innovative Teaching & Learning), 'Classroom Teaching Research for All Students' (2017, Proceedings of the 13th International Congress on Mathematical Education), and 'Assessing Student Learning in Number Sense Using Model-Strategy-Application with Reasoning Approach' (2017, Journal of Mathematics Education). An has received extensive recognition, including multiple Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity (RSCA) Awards from 2002 to 2021, Service Learning Awards (2015–2018), an International Project Award (2011), and the Distinguished Graduate Alumnus Award from Texas A&M University (2004). She has chaired department committees such as Grade Appeals (2010–present) and Technology (2005–2007), served as treasurer for the California Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (2004–2007) and AERA Special Interest Group on Research in Mathematics Education (2012–2014), and holds editorial roles for journals including the Journal of Mathematics Education, Journal of School Science and Mathematics, and Quaderni di Ricerca in Didattica.
