Sijia Guo is a Lecturer in Chinese Studies in the School of International Studies, Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University, with her current appointment beginning on 2 January 2025. She holds a Doctorate degree in Computer-assisted Language Learning from Macquarie University, awarded on 20 June 2019, with her thesis titled "Interaction and task design in a collaborative learning environment: a case study of web conferencing in an introductory Chinese course." Guo also earned a Master of Education in Curriculum and Teaching Methodology, specializing in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, from Beijing Language and Culture University on 25 June 2010, and a Bachelor degree in Science in Biology (Normal) from Capital Normal University on 30 June 2007. Her career includes extensive practical experience teaching Chinese in both China and Australia at the Princeton in Beijing intensive language program, Beijing Language and Culture University, Tsinghua University, and Macquarie University. At Macquarie, she serves as unit convenor for introductory and intermediate Chinese Studies units such as CHIN1010, CHIN1020, CHIN1210, CHIN2010, and CHIN2020.
Guo's research specializations encompass task-based language teaching, online Chinese teaching via web-conferencing systems, second language acquisition, and captioned videos in foreign language education. Key publications include "The implementation of task-based teaching in an online Chinese class through web conferencing" (System, 2016), "Collaborative tasks in web conferencing: a case study on Chinese online" (JALT CALL Journal, 2017), "How to creatively flip to online learning environments: a showcase of design and tools for an award-winning, online language teaching project" (CALL-EJ, 2022), "Effects of captioned videos on learners' comprehension" (Journal of Global Literacies, Technologies, and Emerging Pedagogies, 2020), "Task design to enhance learners' collaboration and engagement in an online Chinese learning environment" (book chapter, Springer, 2020), "任务式教学法在网上汉语课堂的应用" (Journal of International Chinese Teaching, 2020), and "An exploration of design principles to enhance students' L2 acquisition in a flipped class" (book chapter, Springer, 2019). She has also presented at international conferences including FLEAT VI (2015), JALTCALL (2014), EUROCALL (2014), and the 2nd World Chinese Symposium of Peking University (2020). In 2015, Guo received the Faculty of Arts Learning and Teaching Award for outstanding contributions to student learning. Her forthcoming work includes "Exploring the relationship between task type and learners' online interaction" (2025).
