Dr. Simon Degroot is a Senior Lecturer at the Queensland College of Art and Design, Griffith University, where he holds the positions of Program Director, Visual Arts, and Creative Director, QCAD LiveArt. He earned his PhD from Griffith University in 2017 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts with First Class Honours from the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, in 2013. Degroot's practice centers on abstract painting, site-specific installations, and public art projects, including large-scale murals integrated into architectural and urban environments. His academic career at Griffith involves teaching courses such as Public Art and leading student initiatives in live art and community-based projects, contributing to campus enhancements and public spaces across Queensland.
Degroot has an extensive exhibition record, with solo shows including Transfer Echo at Jan Manton Gallery, Brisbane (2021); Reconstructive at THIS IS NO FANTASY, Melbourne (2021); Constructive at Caboolture Regional Art Gallery (2020); Flat Monuments at Jan Manton Art, Brisbane (2019); Capricious Forms at Jan Manton Art, Brisbane (2018); and his PhD exhibition Familiar Beyond Recognition at Spiro Grace Art Rooms, Brisbane (2017). Group exhibitions feature Reflection Distortion at Artisan, Brisbane (2021); Micro Histories at Museum of Brisbane (2019); and Abstraction Twenty Eighteen at Five Walls Projects, Melbourne (2018). Notable public commissions include Cadence mural for Brunswick St Station, Queensland Rail (2020); Flow Through for Rocklea Station (2019); and Recreation Gestures for Camperdown Tennis, Sydney (2019). His works reside in collections such as Artbank (Sydney and Melbourne), Museum of Brisbane, Moreton Bay Regional Galleries, Sunshine Coast University Hospital, and Lady Cilento Hospital. Awards include two wins at the Moreton Bay Region Art Awards (2015, 2018), finalist in Sunshine Coast Art Awards (2021), Redland Art Awards (2016, 2014), Highly Commended in Clayton Utz Art Award (2015), and Griffith University Post-Graduate Research Scholarship (2014). Degroot has engaged in professional activities like leading Collage Painting workshops for Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (2017) and panel discussions on public art.
