About Simon

Professor Simon Lang is Professor of Practice - Energy Geoscience and Director of the Centre for Energy Geoscience in the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Western Australia. He earned his PhD in Geology and Mineralogy from the University of Queensland in 1994, with a thesis on the evolution of a Late Devonian alluvial system in the Lower Bulgeri Formation, Broken River Province, North Queensland, and completed his BSc Honours during employment at the Geological Survey of Queensland. With approximately 40 years of experience across government, industry, and academia, Lang began his career at the Geological Survey of Queensland (1979-1992), mapping large parts of central and northern Queensland. He served as Lecturer in Sedimentology and Stratigraphy at Queensland University of Technology (1992-1999) and Associate Professor at the National Centre for Petroleum Geology & Geophysics, University of Adelaide (1999-2005). In industry, he coordinated and managed stratigraphy and reservoir analysis teams at Woodside Energy (2005-2013), acted as Senior Stratigrapher in Chevron's Seismic Geomorphology and Clastic Stratigraphy teams in Houston (2013-2015) and as Geologic Services Manager and Stratigraphy Advisor in Perth (2015-2018).

Lang's research focuses on sedimentology, stratigraphy and basin analysis, petroleum geology, sequence and seismic stratigraphy, applications to reservoir characterization and basin analysis, and geo-sequestration. He has published over 100 papers and geological maps, supervised numerous graduate students, conducted field courses in Australia and Southeast Asia, and taught industry classes internationally. He leads research consortia on quantitative seismic stratigraphy and quantitative reservoir analogues. Key recent publications include 'Assessing the lateral and vertical variability of shelf-margin depositional systems and associated forcing mechanisms: A forward modeling approach' (2025, co-authored with J.W. Shepherd, V. Paumard et al.); 'Investigating relationships between shoreline process regime, shelf-margin architecture, and deep-water sand delivery: Insights from the early post-rift Hammerhead shelf margin' (2024, co-authored with J.W. Shepherd, V. Paumard, A.D. George); 'Australian compilation of seismic-derived bathymetry' (2025, co-authored with U. Lebrec, V. Paumard et al.); and 'Structural Uncertainty Due to Fault Timing: A Multimodel Case Study from the Perth Basin' (2025, co-authored with K. Bardot et al.). His awards include the Australian National Geoscience Champion (2024, Australian Geoscience Council), Barry Goldstein Medal for Innovation, Collaboration & Communication in Geoscience (2024, PESA), and PESA Distinguished Lecturer (2010). Lang teaches the postgraduate course Advanced Energy Geoscience for a Low Carbon Future and contributes to UN SDGs on affordable clean energy, industry innovation, and climate action.
